Available Roosters

Silver Marans.jpg
IMG_6225 - Copy - Copy.JPG

Any roosters we have available will be listed here. Our hopes for our extra boys is that they find a safe place to land in someone's flock where someone will enjoy them and love them for years to come. We will note that we don't recommend roosters as your only form of predator protection. Most any predator who might eat a chicken can eat a rooster as well. We don't want to see our guys be used as essentially bait so the hens can escape. We recommend livestock guardian dogs or a predator proof coop and run to keep your poultry safe. A good rooster will certainly give his life to protect his hens, but we don't want them to ever have to. Your set up will be taken into consideration when placing our roos with you.

We will always list why we have chosen not to keep a particular rooster for our own flock. Sometimes he may have a flaw that causes him not to be a purebred breeding candidate but he still might make someone lovely backyard flock birds or project bird. Sometimes we simply have enough of that variety and the roo is an extra and may make a nice breeding bird. We will try to price all roosters and cockerels fairly. In most cases the price will simply be break even on what we have spent to raise them. Sometimes we are taking a loss to get them homed.

We will never offer an extremely mean roo for sale without foreclosing that information. If you are looking for a cheap bird to eat, please be honest and let us know. Our good natured guys we really prefer go to pet and breeding homes, but if you let us know your intentions are to eat a roo, we may have a hard cull available either due to a poor temperament or one in need of humane culling due to injury or a developmental issue. We don't like to see anything go to waste and would be happy to let a rooster feed your family if his days here are over.

We treat all of our roos with kindness and respect. We really love all our roos, even any we can't win over. They are all handled regularly from hatch. If a rooster is showing mean behavior we give them every chance to come around. We will spend extra time handling that rooster and hand feed and offer treats when he is being polite to try to win him over. I truly believe the way to almost any animals heart is through its stomach. We will especially give young cockerels a few passes as they grow and learn to deal with their hormones. However, we will not have a dangerous animal here so there is a limit to what and how much of such behavior can be tolerated. We will breed for temperament as much as any other quality and will never keep a mean rooster for breeding. I can't promise that my roosters will be just as nice to you as they are to us, but will give you a fair, honest description of how they have been for us.

We have our own little scoring system for simplicity on rooster temperament just to make it easier to describe our guys on a 0-5 scale.

0- Has never shown any aggression towards any human ever.

1- Had a momentary thought of naughtiness only a few times but changed  his mind and has since been polite. Will also use a 1 for a roo who bites when you touch him but is otherwise polite.

2- Occasionally bratty behavior. May be only when spooked or when hens are upset and usually has an explanation.

3- Prone to regular bratty behavior but does not always do it and is somewhat manageable. May chase or jump at you.

4- Regularly flogs people and/or bites aggressively. Gives chase when backs are turned. Will back down when approached.

5 - Basically Evil Hellspawn. Attacks any human any chance it has and doesn't back down. Such roos will never be bred and always be hard culls. They will not be listed and available only for food.

Dude

Breed: Splash Laced Red Wyandotte
Hatch Date: Week of Feb 20, 2021
Temperament score: 1 (bites, but rarely)
Reason Available: Single comb
Weight: Heavy
Special needs: None

Price:$35

Dude is really a nice rooster. He is very kind to hens and takes good care of them offering food and making them nice nests. He is not rough and does not overbreed them. He isn't cuddly but is curious and will follow you around. He is easy to work around and will eat from your hand. He has never shown a moments aggression toward any human. He will bite your hand if you stick it near him in the coop at night sometimes, simply from being spooked.
He is a rather large rooster and I would not recommend him for bantam hens. However, being rather large he is not a good flyer and is therefor easy to contain!

He will make someone a wonderful addition to their backyard flock and he is quite pretty!

Zuko

Breed : Silkie
Hatch Date : Week of Feb 20. 2021
Temperament Score: 3
Reason Available: light skin, bad temperament
Weight: Bantam
Special needs : non

Price : Free with Dude, or $10 alone

I am offering Zuko only because he is, as far as jerk roosters go, easily managed. He is Mostly show but would not be safe around children. He is brave enough to spur small children. I go in daily with him and he only chases me occasionally once I'm on the other side of the fence, but I can not promise he would not attack a stranger. Once picked up he is calm and easy to handle. He is currently housed with Dude and 2 other Wyandotte roos that he was raised with and could be thrown in with Dude as a package deal. They get along and do not fight. He will however fight with other rooster he doesn't know. Being a Silkie Zuko does not fly and is easy to contain.
He is a rooster that I would allow to go as a hard cull to feed a family. If you are looking for a rooster to eat please be honest.

Black Ameraucana

Breed : Black Ameraucana (BBS lines)
Hatch Date: April 30, 2021
Temperament Score: 0
Reason Available: gold leakage
Weight: medium
Special Needs: None

Price: $30

This fella has pretty nice type but a tiny bit of leakage in his hackles. He isn't a cuddle bug but has no human meanness at all. He will eat from your hand and once caught is calm to handle. He is a good flyer and will need good fencing! He should be homozygous for the Blue Egg gene and might make a nice addition to a green or olive egger project!

Monkey

Breed : White Ameraucana
Hatch Date : April 30, 2021
Temperament score: 0
Reason available : type, double spurs
Weight : medium
Special Needs : Taaaall Fencing

Price: $50

Monkey is a farm favorite here. He is very very friendly, will come when called, and will eat from your hand and sometimes tolerate petting. He is very smart, very observant, and very people oriented. He has no human aggression at all. He so far does not overbreed hens even in small groups.
He should carry 2 copies of the blue egg gene. He would make a wonderful addition to a mixed backyard flock or olive or green egger project.

Monkey is very talented at flying and climbing. Even if you clip his wings he can still climb an 8 foot wall into barn rafters. He Does stay in my 4 ft pasture fence as long as the hens do. But if he wants out you need a roof to keep him in. He is available because I do not need him. He is expensive because I love him and do not particularly wish to sell him. I will be picky about his future home. He is white and not particularly large so will be easy for predators to see.
