CSA
CSA stands for "Community Supported Agriculture".
A CSA is a type of share program where the customer purchases a "Share" of a particular farm's goods. The customer pays upfront in late winter or early spring and is provided with weekly or biweekly produce, meats, diary, eggs, and/or flowers by that farm. The consumer gets whatever is in season and producing that week. We will discuss the pros and cons of a CSA below so you can decide if a CSA is something that is right for you.
This year at Landalile we are offering a limited number of CSA shares. A share is intended for a family of 2-3, depending on how often you cook. A large family who only cooks 1-2 days a week might find the share size adequate and whereas a large 4+ person family who cooks every night might need 2 shares.
Our program will run for 12 weeks and will begin at end of June or early July depending on when there is enough produce to fill the boxes. Depending on the weather, we may be able to extend the weeks for an additional per week cost.

-No list-
No one wants to waste time or food. Because of that we will allow all CSA customers to put up to THREE items on their No List. These are items that you never want in your CSA order.
Please only put items on the No List that you are positive you do not like and will not eat and also that you do not have friends or family who might like them. Don't put an item on the No List simply because you have not heard of it. Trying new things is one of the fun parts of a CSA!
Customers are not required to have a No List.

Pros of purchasing a CSA:
-
Money savings - Typically the amount of goods you get in your CSA will be much cheaper than if you had purchased all of those goods individually by the item or lb. Our CSA is cheaper per week than the Subscription service.
-
Variety - By eating in season you will be getting a variety of produce throughout the year
-
Health - Having a weekly or biweekly CSA will encourage you to eat healthy. You will already have the produce or other goods on hand and be more likely to eat those over fast food or other unhealthy food
-
New things - Because you don't usually get to choose your CSA items, you may find yourself with a fruit or vegetable that you would never have chosen to buy. Since you have it, you will be more likely to try it and may find a whole world of food you didn't know you were missing out on. I personally had no idea that i LOVE butternut squash until I grew them in the garden in 2021. If I grow it I'm sure going to try it. To my happy surprise I love them! Our 2022 discovery was Georgia Candy Roaster squash! They will be a must in our garden from now on!
-
Convenience - Many CSAs offer delivery options. It's even easier than going to the grocery store. Even those that don't, your food is already collected, packaged and ready to go. You don't have to walk around and shop or even think about what to buy. We will be offering deliver for 2025.
-
Freshness - The only way you can get any fresher is if you pick the items yourself! CSA foods are going straight from the garden to you and are fresher than anything in a grocery store
-
Supporting farmers/local - When you purchase a CSA you know every dollar is going straight to that farm. You can feel good about supporting your community and keeping local farms in business.
-
Involvement- When you are part of a CSA program you are staying involved with that farm. You will get updates on farm activities and learn a lot about the struggles and joys of the farm you purchase from.
-
Bonuses - Many farms offer bonus items only to their CSA customers. Some farms have farm days specifically for CSA only customers to attend. In addition, CSA shares are the farmer's first pick when selling their produce. If they are short on something, the CSA customers are going to get it first and it may be unavailable at the farmers market or at their farm store to anyone else. At Landalile our CSA customers who choose to do the egg add on are going to get eggs first! If we run short, non CSA customers might miss out. We often have a waitlist on eggs.

Cons of purchasing a CSA:
-
Upfront cost - Because CSAs are paid for upfront, this means that there is a large cost all at once. This may be difficult for some people. If this is a problem be sure to ask the farm if they have any additional payment options. Some farms may let you pay differently than they have advertised if you ask.
-
Risk- Farming is always a risk. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature. When you are a CSA member you are supporting that farm come what may. CSA purchases are non refundable in most circumstances. If there is a crop failure that year you are accepting the loss of that crop with the farmer.
-
Quantity - For someone who doesn't cook often, a CSA may provide Too much raw food. If you rarely ever cook, and don't want to start cooking, a CSA may not be right for you.
-on another note, some weeks someone may find they have leftovers they will not be able to use. perhaps they were busy that week or going on vacation. We encourage you to keep in mind friends and family who might enjoy your CSA items in case of weeks of vacation or any other reason you have extras. And remember that your CSA cost you much less than if you had bought each item individually. -
Variety - Some people are rather picky eaters and don't like many fruits or vegetables, or like to eat the same things all the time. Since you typically do not get to pick your CSA items that could leave a picky eater with a lot of things they won't eat. If that sounds like you or your household, a CSA might not be right for you.
